Recruitment & Hiring
The Personnel Department provides service for the employees of the Lowell School Department in a variety of ways. From initial hiring to retirement planning, our staff is ready to assist and provide guidance with necessary paperwork and information. One of the main functions of the Personnel Office is recruitment and hiring of staff.
Recruitment begins each year on December 1 with the publication of all open teaching positions in critical need areas (Special Education, English as a Second Language, Mathematics, the Sciences and Reading) on the website, in the schools and at the Personnel Office. All other teaching positions are listed on February 1 and these listings are updated frequently through the summer. Teacher transfers and hiring of new staff continues through August. Administrative and other staff vacancies are published on the Lowell Public Schools website and in local newspapers. Copies of the posted positions can be found at the Personnel Office and at each school site.
Each year , the Lowell Public Schools join with 28 other school systems in the Merrimack Valley to sponsor a Teacher Recruitment Fair. The fair attracts over 800 teacher candidates in areas ranging from Elementary Education, Special Education, Mathematics, the Sciences, English Language Arts, Physical Education and the Arts.
Highly Qualified Staff
The Personnel Department works with each teacher and administrator to ensure that they possess an appropriate Massachusetts Department of Education educator license. All administrators possess an appropriate license in the area in which they are working. In the school year 2007-2008, the Department of Education certified that our teaching staff was 98% highly qualified in the areas in which they were teaching. Along with our highly qualified teaching staff, we are proud to say that our paraprofessional staff is 100% highly qualified under the federal guidelines of the "No Child Left Behind Act".
The Office of Professional Development and the Lowell Teacher Academy work with the Personnel Department to offer high quality professional development, formal mentoring opportunities, graduate level coursework and a state approved District Licensure Program. These opportunities are sponsored through partnership programs with the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Fitchburg State College. The Lowell School Department offers reimbursement opportunities for staff to reduce the cost of tuition for our courses.
The Personnel Department actively recruits qualified substitutes for temporary teacher or paraprofessional vacancies during the school year. Candidates for substitute teaching must successfully complete the application forms including a Criminal background check and attend one of the monthly substitute training sessions in order to be considered for day to day substitute work. If approved for substitute teaching, the substitute caller will contact the candidate for daily assignments.
