    Hello Shaughnessy Families,

    Here are suggestions for at home learning activities:

    EGG CARTON CATERPILLAR

    KINDERGARTEN, MISS LIZ’S CSA CLASS, MISS CASSIE’S CSA CLASS

    PARENT NEEDS TO SUPERVISE CHILD DURING THIS ACTIVITY

    MATERIALS:

    ·      ONE STRIP OF THE BOTTOM OF A CARDBOARD EGG CARTON FOR THE CATERPILLAR’S BODY (PARENT NEEDS TO CUT THE STRIP FOR THEIR CHILD)

    ·      NEWSPAPER OR TRASH BAG OR WAX PAPER TO COVER THE TABLE YOU ARE WORKING ON.

    ·      WATERCOLOR PAINT OR TEMPERA PAINT AND PAINT BRUSH

    ·      PAPER FOR EYES, NOSE, MOUTH AND ANTENNAE – PARENT CAN HELP WITH MAKING THESE FEATURES

    DIRECTIONS:

    ·     GIVE YOUR CHILD ONE COLOR OF PAINT AT A TIME TO PAINT IN THE SECTIONS OF THE CATERPILLAR BODY. THEY CAN PAINT EACH SECTION A DIFFERENT COLOR OR THEY CAN ALTERNATE BETWEEN TWO COLORS AS SHOWN IN THE FINISHED EXAMPLE. MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD CLEANS THE PAINT BRUSH WHEN THEY ARE CHANGING COLORS.

    ·     WHILE THE CATERPILLAR BODY IS DRYING MAKE THE EYES, NOSE, MOUTH, AND ANTENNAE.

    ·     WHEN THE CATERPILLAR BODY IS DRY THEY CAN GLUE ALL OF THE FEATURES ONTO THE CATERPILLAR.

    ·     OPTIONAL: YOU MAY GLUE CATERPILLAR ONTO A LARGE GREEN LEAF.

    BUTTERFLY

    GRADE 3, GRADE 4, AND MISS BROOKE’S CSA CLASS

    LOOK AT ALL 7 PAGES TO SEE THE STEPS TO THE PROJECT AND FINISHED EXAMPLES.

    MATERIALS:

    ·      2 PAPER COFFEE FILTERS FOR BUTTERFLY WINGS OR ONE PIECE OF COMPUTER PAPER CUT IN HALF SO YOU WILL HAVE TWO PIECES FOR WINGS

    ·      MARKERS OR CRAYONS

    ·      TRASH BAG OR WAX PAPER OR NEWSPAPER TO PROTECT TABLE SURFACE YOU ARE WORKING ON

    ·      RUBBER BAND OR A TWIST TIE (TO HOLD BUTTERFLY WINGS TOGETHER)

    ·      PAPER TO MAKE BODY, HEAD AND ANTENNAE OF BUTTERFLY

    ·      SCISSORS

    ·      GLUE

              DIRECTIONS:

    ·      USE MARKERS OR CRAYONS TO DECORATE THE WINGS WITH COLORFUL PATTERN DESIGNS. – SEE EXAMPLES.

    ·      LET THE DECORATED PAPER DRY COMPLETELY.

    ·      FOLD THE PAPERS BACK AND FORTH THE WAY YOU WOULD FOLD PAPER TO MAKE A FAN.

    ·      PLACE THE 2 FOLDED WINGS TOGETHER  (ONE ON TOP OF THE OTHER). THEN, WRAP A RUBBER BAND AROUND THE CENTER OF THE WINGS AND CAREFULLY SPREAD THE WINGS OUT TO SHOW THE DESIGNS.

    ·      USE BLACK PAPER (OR ANY COLOR YOU WANT) TO MAKE THE BODY AND HEAD AND ANTENNAE OF THE BUTTERFLY AND GLUE TO CENTER OF BUTTERFLY WINGS.
