Welcome

Dear Families,

Welcome to the Special Programs Department of Lowell Public Schools. We oversee extended learning opportunities for students in grades K–9, offering high-quality before-school, after-school, and summer programs that support academic growth, social-emotional development, and student engagement beyond the school day.

Our largest initiative is Explore & Expand, Lowell Public Schools’ before- and after-school enrichment program. Through Explore & Expand and our broader extended learning work, students experience safe, welcoming environments where they build skills, form relationships, and explore new interests.

We invite you to explore this website to learn more about Explore & Expand and all the extended learning opportunities available to Lowell students and families.

Sincerely,
Rebecca A. Duda, Ed.D.

Mission of the Special Programs Department

Our mission is to provide  safe, welcoming, and supportive extended programs where all students can learn, grow, and succeed. We offer hands-on, real-world activities that help students improve their academic skills, especially verbal communication, and build strong social and emotional skills. We work with families, school staff, and community partners to make sure every student feels known, valued, and ready to reach their goals.

Vision

Our vision is for every student in Lowell to have access to a high-quality extended learning programs that:

  • Encourages curiosity, creativity, and student voice
  • Builds confidence, leadership, and positive relationships
  • Reflects and respects the diverse cultures and languages of our community
  • Supports students in becoming engaged learners who communicate clearly and work well with others
  • Strengthens the connection between school, family, and community

We imagine extended learning  programs where students feel proud of their work, excited to learn, and confident in who they are—today and in the future.
