Knowledge Bowl

Kathryn P. Stoklosa Knowledge Bowl

The Kathryn P. Stoklosa Knowledge Bowl is an annual academic competition that brings together middle school students from across Lowell Public Schools to celebrate scholarship, teamwork, and intellectual curiosity. Students compete in a lively quiz-style tournament that challenges their knowledge across multiple subject areas while representing their schools with pride.

Teams are composed of students from Lowell’s middle schools who work together to answer questions based on the curriculum for grades 5–8. Questions cover a wide range of subjects including English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, and current events.

How the Competition Works

Each team competes in a series of rounds designed to test both teamwork and quick thinking. The competition includes:

  • Math Team Round – Students work collaboratively to solve challenging math problems.

  • Toss-Up Round – Individual students race to buzz in and answer questions from a variety of academic categories.

  • Current Events Round – Teams collaborate to answer questions about local, national, and international news.

  • Toss-Up and Bonus Round – Teams can earn additional points by correctly answering bonus questions connected to a category theme.

  • Speed Round – A fast-paced final round where teams answer questions as quickly as possible.

Throughout the competition, students demonstrate knowledge, teamwork, and strategic thinking while competing in a supportive and exciting academic environment.

Representing Lowell

The Knowledge Bowl is not only a celebration of academic achievement within Lowell Public Schools—it also prepares students to compete beyond the district. The top three teams from the Lowell competition go on to represent the city in the Greater Regional Knowledge Bowl, where they compete alongside students from other communities.

Honoring Kathryn P. Stoklosa

The competition is named in honor of Kathryn Philbin Stoklosa, a longtime Lowell School Committee member who dedicated more than two decades of service to improving educational opportunities for Lowell students.

Throughout her years of service, Mrs. Stoklosa was a strong advocate for academic excellence and believed deeply in the power of education to open doors for young people. The Knowledge Bowl reflects the values she championed—encouraging students to challenge themselves, celebrate learning, and take pride in their academic accomplishments.
