Gregory Passeri Named Next Principal of STEM Academy

Lowell Public Schools Superintendent Joel Boyd is pleased to announce that Dr. Gregory Passeri has been named the next principal of the STEM Academy, effective July 1, 2021.

Dr. Passeri is currently the principal of the John J. Shaughnessy Elementary School. He will finish the school year at the Shaughnessy before transitioning to leading the STEM Academy. Dr. Passeri will succeed Dr. Kimberlee Henry, who will depart at the end of the school year to become the Director of Equity and Inclusion for the Watertown Public Schools.

Dr. Passeri has been the principal at the Shaughnessy for the last three years. Prior to that, he served as Assistant Principal at the Dr. An Wang Middle School for six years. Before coming to the Lowell Public Schools, Dr. Passeri taught social studies in Peabody, MA and directed an afterschool program through the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Salem.

“Dr. Passeri is an accomplished instructional leader with proven experience at both the elementary and middle school levels,” Superintendent Boyd said. “He’s a collaborative, student-centered leader, who presents an ideal leadership fit for the STEM Academy.”

The STEM Academy is the second largest school in the District and serves students in grades K-8.

“With his blend of middle school and elementary school experience, Dr. Passeri is a uniquely suitable choice to lead the STEM Academy,” incoming Chief Schools Officer Liam Skinner said. “He will bring stability to the STEM Academy.”

Dr. Passeri said he looks forward to developing a partnership with the students, staff and families at the STEM Academy.

“I’m excited to take this next step at the STEM Academy. I want to make the STEM a place where students feel welcome, staff are excited to teach, and parents have the opportunity to share in this work,” Dr. Passeri said.

As for the Shaughnessy, Dr. Passeri said being principal there has been the greatest privilege of his career so far.

“I have no doubt that the Shaughnessy School will continue to move forward in the best interest of our students because of the people I know who will continue to do this important work,” Dr. Passeri said.

The District will form a screening committee and begin the search process for the next principal of the Shaughnessy Elementary School.
