Liam Skinner Named Interim Superintendent of Schools
Congratulations to Interim Superintendent of Schools Liam Skinner, who has been serving as Chief of Schools since 2021!
A native of Cork, Ireland, Liam immigrated to the United States in 1988 to teach at St. Patrick School in Lowell’s Acre neighborhood. He also taught at Lowell Catholic High School for several years before becoming an eighth-grade math teacher at the Daley Middle School in 1994. This began a 27-year devotion to the Daley where Liam assumed the principalship in 1999. He led the Daley into the era of standards-based instruction, a context in which the school has thrived. Liam fostered a culture of excellence at the Daley, one characterized by a staff that continually seeks to improve instructional practices, who hold high expectations of students, communicate their belief in them, and take responsibility for their academic success and personal growth. Liam has been a mentor for many other Lowell administrators and has been involved in a number of administrator training initiatives. These initiatives include co-leading a School Leadership Institute in collaboration with UMass Lowell providing professional development to school leaders from Lowell and other area districts, spanning topics such as cultural proficiency, supervision of instruction, and effective change management. He has lived in the city since his arrival in 1988, currently residing with his wife and children in the Highlands neighborhood. Liam considers himself a proud Lowellian who is dedicated to the students and families of Lowell.
