    Hello Sullivan Community,

I hope you had a nice break. THE WEEK BEFORE BREAK, The Sullivan STEM Club did us proud. Poor weather couldn’t stop them in the annual Lowell Public School Science and Engineering Fair. Great job Sullivan Future Scientists. We also were able to celebrate Sullivan students who’ve exhibited great efforts in academics and behavior at our February Respect and Responsibility Assemblies. Super job kids! Finally, our Student Council led the Sullivan in a Spirit Week to show off our Sullivan Pride. Great job all!

THIS WEEK is a busy week at the Sullivan. First and foremost, due to conflicting school events, THERE IS NO AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMING AT THE SULLIVAN THIS TUESDAY, 2/26. Also on Tuesday, 2/26, we have our parent conferences from 2:30-3:30 PM, All Sullivan parents are invited to attend to talk to teachers about their child’s progress. Our guidance counselor, Ms. Dandurant, will also be in attendance for any grade 8 parents who want to discuss their child’s options/courses/etc., etc for high school next year. Ms. Dandurant is a wealth of knowledge regarding 8th graders transitioning to 9th grade. Finally, on Tuesday 2/26 from 6-7 PM, the Sullivan PTO will have their monthly meeting. Finally, on Friday 3/1 Middlesex Partnerships for youth will be putting on a grade level student presentation entitled: Navigating the Cyber World - While there are countless benefits from using technology to communicate, there are also potential challenges and even dangerous situations that can arise. This student assembly gives students the tools necessary to protect each person's digital footprint and engage in safe cyber behavior. Grade 5 from the Reilly will be participating as well!

Below are IMPORTANT SCHOOL INFORMATIONAL ITEMS:

    • School Environment-Climate: As we continue to strive to create a welcoming, warm, academic and distraction-free Sullivan School environment/climate, we continue to work with the kids on the following: In classrooms and the halls, there are NO CELL PHONES, HOODS and COATS ALLOWED. These are similar rules to other middle schools in Lowell and across the Commonwealth. Specific reasons for these rules vary, but basically they are in place again to create a welcoming, warm, academic and distraction-free Sullivan School environment-climate. Parents are asked to discuss this with their children and support the school in their child’s compliance with these directives. Student disciplinary measures can-will be initiatived for non compliance with these rules.
    • From the School Nurse. For the health and safety of all students at the Sullivan, no student is allowed to carry any medication- prescription medication or over the counter medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin, with them at school. The only exception is for asthma inhalers with the permission and approval of the of the school nurse, parent and doctor. Any student found with medication will be sent to the office or the nurse, the medicine will be confiscated, and must be picked up by a parent. If there is a need for your child to take medication during the day at school, please contact Nurse Colleen for paperwork and protocol. On a related note, please see attached flier regarding Unwanted Meds and Sharps disposal day.
    • Sullivan After School Programming -21st Century- Update. FYI. Overall, we’ve had a poor showing of late of students committing to attend after school programming a minimum of 2 days a week. Please be advised that we do have a long list of students who wish to attend. Students enrolled in the afterschool program must be committed to attending a minimum of 2 days a week.  Absenteeism has been high over the last few weeks. If students are no longer interested in attending, please let Ms Dasilva know so that she can let students who are waiting to join know that there is space available.

    Hello Sullivan Community,

I hope you had a nice weekend. Busy week at the Sullivan THIS PAST WEEK. Grade 8 had the Improbable Players come in who put on a powerful performance called End of the Line. How it starts: from casual use to opioids...They followed the progression of four young adults with substance use disorder. Each began their opioid addiction in a unique way demonstrating the different ways young people come in contact with opioids. The play weaved these four storylines together and uses powerful visuals to convey the struggle of opioid dependence. This is one of the activities we use to educate our student in health related topics that all pre-high school students should know. In addition, we had a wonderful grade 7 and 8 Valentines Day dance this past Friday evening. The kids were very well behaved and had a lot of fun!

THIS WEEK is a busy week at the Sullivan. First and foremost, due to conflicting school evetns, THERE IS NO AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMING AT THE SULLIVAN THIS TUESDAY, 2-12, AND WEDNESDAY, 2-13. Hello Sullivan Community,

I hope you had a nice weekend and are resting up for the Pats in the Super Bowl next weekend. .Our boys and girls basketball teams keep working hard. Several members of our Student Council went to the YOU LEAD Conference put on by Middlesex Partnerships for Youth in Westford on Friday, January 25th. Members were able to meet with other student leaders form around the state and learned how they participated in their school communities.  Students were also able to participate in a presentation that included topics of student leadership, peer pressure, vaping, and bullying.  Student Council members are very excited to being back to the Sullivan everything that they learned. Finally, our grade six students (and principal:) watched Incredibles 2 this past Friday in a movie event put on by the Sullivan PTO. It was a great experience had by all. The kids were very well behaved and it was a great way to kick off the weekend.

Below are IMPORTANT SCHOOL INFORMATIONAL ITEMS:

    • We have THREE away afterschool (4-6 PM) basketball games this week: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at the Pyne Arts, Stoklosa and Butler respectively.
    • The Improbable Players are coming to put on a performance for grade 8 regarding the dangers of substance abuse and 2/4. Stay tuned.
    • Parent Conferences are 2:30-3:30 PM on 2/12. All Sullivan parents are invited to attend to talk to teachers about their child’s progress. Our guidance counselor (Ms. Dandurant) will also be in attendance for any grade 8 parents who want to discuss their child’s options/courses/etc., etc for high school next year. Ms. Dandurant is a wealth of knowledge regarding 8th graders transitioning to 9th grade.

    From the Sullivan PTO:

    • Collect those boxtops!  The classes in each grade level with the most boxtops by February 15 will get extra recess.
    • Sullivan Night at Fenway is May 10th at 7:10.  The game is Seattle Mariners vs Boston Red Sox. Order forms are being sent home and are due February 1st.
    • PTO is hosting a 7th and 8th grade dance on Friday, February 8th, 5:30-7:30. Please email sullivanpto@hotmail.com if you can chaperone.

The following is A MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING SUPERINTENDENT. This is an important notification about a vote taken by the Lowell School Committee during the January 16th School Committee Meeting that impacts all schools and the Family Resource Center.  In that meeting, it was voted (and passed) to remove the student handbook language in all grades that states head wraps and scarves are prohibited - effective now. Handbooks will be amended this week on-line, so please be certain that if you are sharing a Handbook with a student or parent/guardian that you print the version that is on-line that reflects the changes.
