    Hello Sullivan Community,

I hope you had a great long weekend. Between the snow and a big Pats win, we were kept busy!  Our boys and girls basketball teams are carrying on. Some great efforts both. Keep up the good work. Go Sullivan!!!!

Below are IMPORTANT SCHOOL INFORMATIONAL ITEMS:

    • Be advised that there is a new Allied Arts schedule to begin on 1/23. (See the website for details.) As part of this, we will be trying to address more student “health” related topics/issues that surface for our kids. Basically, periodically (once out of every three weeks), each classroom will have a “Health” class as part of their PE rotation where students will be learning about topics such as the hazards of vaping/smoking, peer relationships/bullying, and the like. We will still be having outside organizations come in and work with our kids, i.e., Healthy Futures, Middlesex Partnerships for Youth, Improbable Players, etc., but we are hoping that adding the aforementioned will give kids a more thorough knowledge of middle school health related topics. We will see how it goes.
    • Take a look at the Sullivan website. On it, you will find a link to our 2018-2019 Winter Concert. A great night had by all which was recorded by Lowell Cable.
    • Finally, the following is from the Sullivan PTO:
      • The Sullivan PTO is hosting a 6th grade movie event Friday, January 25th, after school until the movie ends at 4:30.  The movie is free, and snacks and drinks are $1 each. Signed permission slips are required.
      • Collect those boxtops!  The classes in each grade level with the most boxtops by February 15 will get extra recess.
      • Sullivan Night at Fenway is May 10th at 7:10.  The game is Seattle Mariners vs Boston Red Sox. Order forms are being sent home and are due February 1st.

    Hello Sullivan Community,

This past week we had a very successful options-based DRILL where we practiced various scenarios if we had an intruder in the building. The LPD and new school resource officer Dower were involved and reported both kids and adults did a great job. We also had our Respect and Responsibility Assemblies this past week were we were able to recognize and celebrate some of the wonderful efforts behaviorally and academically kids have been doing. Keep up the good work!

Below are some important school site information for THIS WEEK AND BEYOND:

    • The afterschool program will start this week.  Participating students should have received their after school letters this week that details if they have been accepted into the program and what sessions they are enrolled. If your child is new to the program and has requested transportation, please have them check in with Ms Dasilva during homeroom to ensure that their transportation is all set. Returning students should report to the cafe at dismissal time.
    • The Boys and Girls Middle School Basketball Season is underway. Great efforts this past week by both the girls and boys teams. The girls went into double overtime this past Thursday against the STEM and ended with a tie. Great job! Good luck this Tuesday and Thursday!
    • Knowledge Bowl is happening. Practices are Tuesday and Thursday from 2:15 to 3:00 with Sullivan’s first match on March 5, 5:30 PM at the Bulter. Go Sullivan!

    Dear Sullivan Parents,

At the Sullivan Middle School the safety of our students is always a top priority. One way we promote safety is by having a safety plan in place for addressing various emergencies. These emergencies include, but are not limited to fires, intruders, bomb threats, and medical emergencies. Although we would never want any of these emergencies to take place, the administration and staff review and practice simulated events at various times throughout the school year to insure that everyone is aware of our safety protocols. We update our safety plan each year, share it with the Assistant Superintendent’s Office and review it with the Lowell Police Department’s School Resource Officers. The Lowell Police and Fire Departments also visit school buildings to review floor plans, gain building key access and discuss communication tactics for emergencies. The City of Lowell has been very proactive with emergency school safety for many years.

TODAY, Thursday January 10th @ 10:30 AM Sullivan, Sullivan students and staff practiced our Intruder on Campus procedures, aka “Options-Based DRILL.” If your child comes home talking about a lockdown or evacuation, please be aware it was a practice DRILL.

Students and staff practiced safety procedures to prepare for a real-life emergency. They did a great job! In a real emergency, we would also send you an automated phone message, so please make sure we have your most updated phone number on record at school.

Again, the safety procedures outlined above are intended to make the Sullivan Middle School safe for all students, staff and families. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you for reading this important message.

    Sincerely,

    Ed Foster

    Hello Sullivan Community,

I hope you had a nice week…...first school week for the new year albeit a short three day week. Some “new” news. On behalf of the Sullivan Community, I’d like to wish SRO Billy Callahan a fond (but not total) farewell. Officer Callahan has done some wonderful work at the Sullivan for kids and adults over the last five years and will be missed. He will still be around town keeping Lowell safe and hopefully stopping by and visiting his home away from home, the Sullivan. Thanks Officer Callahan! And a warm Sullivan welcome is extended to our new SRO Officer Mindy Dower. Officer Dower will be working at the Sullivan (and four other schools). I have invited her to come to say hello and introduce herself at our PTO meeting next week. Welcome School Resource Officer Dower!

FOR THIS WEEK AND BEYOND, be advised of the following:

    • The afterschool program will NOT start this week. It begins the week of 1/14/19.  Participating students will receive their after school letters this week that details if they have been accepted into the program and what they are enrolled in. Stay tuned and call the school if you have any questions.
    • Early Release this Wednesday 1/9/19. ALL STUDENT WILL BE DISMISSED AT 12:10 PM.
    • Sullivan M.S. PTO Meeting is on Tuesday 1/8/19 from 6-7 PM in the library.
    • The Boys and Girls Middle School Basketball Season gets underway this week. Please see schedule below.  Please review the followig Basketball Games Protocol for student spectators:
      • For Home Games: All school rules apply. All Sullivan School students will need a note from a parent or guardian to attend home games. The note should grant permission for the student to attend the game and also state how the student will be getting home (walking or pick-up). The note should also contain a contact phone number. Notes will be collected at the door. Students from other schools must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to attend the game.
      • For Away Games: All school rules apply. All Sullivan School students who wish to attend an away game MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will stay with the student for the entire game. Students cannot attend away games unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
      • Please note: The boys' games start at 4:00PM and the girls' games start at 5:00PM. Please be at the school by 5:45 for pick-up if your child is attending both games. Thank you.
    • We will be having an options based DRILL sometimes during the week of 1/7/19. This DRILL will be unannounced so we can best work on our preparedness in the moment. During this DRILL we will be simulating what to do if there is an intruder in the building. The Lowell Police Department will be involved. I’ll send out a communication after the drill to let you know how we did.

    Hello Sullivan Families,

Happy New Year!!! I hope you had a wonderful and restful holiday break with your family and an friends. The new year is always a good time for reflection and review. We have had a pretty exciting year so far this year with “many-a” positive and exciting initiatives being put in place these busy last four months:

    • NEW MASTER SCHEDULE: Six day rotating schedule allows for variability and valuable common planning time for teachers
    • Daily WIN (“What I Need”) blocks. Our WIN blocks continue to get student “What I (They) Need.”
    • Professional development work in Differentiated instruction; Lucy Caulkins (ELA); Eureka (Math); FOSS kits (Science); and Generation Citizen - Gr. 8 (Social Studies). Our eighth graders did some wonderful work with the new Generation Citizen curriculum where they tackle a social issue head on, research it, present it. Some even went to the Statehouse!
    • STEM Allied Art. The kids have been looking at the science behind “fingerprinting” headed by representatives from the Lowell Police Department. We also have drones and spheres planned for the new year with the support from parents and the PTO. Stay tuned!
    • Establishment of a School Climate Committee aimed at realizing our Vision: “The Sullivan learning community is a welcoming inclusive, and respectful environment where students excel through active engagement and feel safe in taking risks. All community members create success through teamwork, consistent effort and maintaining positive attitudes.”
    • Continued emphasis on PBIS: PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. At the Sullivan, we remind students to be safe, responsible, respectful and kind. Safety is our number one priority. “See something, say something” is emphasized on a daily basis. PBIS is the driving force that helps our staff and students stay on track and thrive in a positive learning environment.
    • Focus on better engaging Sullivan families (enhancing website and communications, updating and keeping current parent information [emails, phone numbers], social events etc.)
    • 21st CENTURY GRANT: Ms. DaSilva has the 21st Century after school programming up and running - Among the highlights were the performances of the Sullivan dance crew and chorus at the Winter Concert. The building alive and kicking now after hours. Great job all! Stay tuned for a Sullivan Musical in the works!
    • Renewed focus on attendance (“Attendance matters.”)
    • Revitalization of school building and grounds.

We will continue to work on implementation and resolve in carrying out these initiatives with fidelity in order to create an optimum school environment for all. Thank you all for your support.

FOR THIS WEEK AND BEYOND, be advised of the following:

    • The Boys and Girls Middle School Basketball Season gets underway during the month of January. Please see schedule below.  Please review the followig Basketball Games Protocol for student spectators:

    Hello Sullivan Families,

WOW!!!!!!!! What a week THIS PAST WEEK. Tell me you were able to catch the Sullivan Winter Concert. Led by band teacher Mr. Buckley, it was a wonderful night of dance, singing and instrumental music this past Thursday. In the spirit of  “It takes a Village….” Mr. A and Mr. Smith helped with the decorations, Mr. Sheehan and Ms. Tarini crowd control, the crack Sullivan custodians made the place sparkle, PTO with refreshments, Ms. Dasilva with organizing the after school program for practices, Ms. McCarthy worked with our dance crew, Mr. Robichaud helping out with music and sound, and the teachers who came to experience the evening and support the kids and staff.  THE KIDS WERE GREAT! What a night and what a way to get into the Christmas and holiday spirit! Take a look at sneak peek/early release video of the Winter Concert. It will be posted on the school website AND will be airing over the break on Channel 22 Lowell!! Stars are born!

FOR THIS WEEK AND AFTER BREAK, be advised of the following:

    • Sullivan School Council Meeting takes place on 12/20/18 from 2:15-3:15 PM in the Sullivan Library.
    • The Boys and Girls Middle School Basketball Season gets underway during the month of January. Please see schedule below:

OTHER IMPORTANT NOTES: Student cell phone/electronic device use continues to be a major problem/distraction at the school overall but in particular in the upper grades. A reminder that to maintain an efficient and effective school learning environment and consistent with the Lowell Public Schools Elementary and Middle School Parent and Student Handbook, unauthorized use of student cell phones, i-phones, and other electronic devices is PROHIBITED on school grounds (including bus trips to and from school). Students who bring cell phones/i-phones/etc. onto school grounds need to have them “shut off” and “put away” in a locker or classroom lock box. Students displaying and/or using these items in an unauthorized way may have them confiscated (to be picked up in the office by parents) and receive administrative consequences.

The following will occur if a students is found to have a cell phone/electronic device on them between 7:35 AM - 2:10 PM:

    • First Offense: Teacher confiscates and holds onto it until end of day. It will be returned it to student with the warning that parents will be contacted next time.
    • Second Offense: Teacher confiscates and holds onto it until end of day and then return it to student. Parent called.
    • Third Offense+: Teacher confiscates and refers student and cell phone to office. Student will be disciplined and administration will contact the parents for retrieval of phone.

Student and parent attention to and support of student policy related to cell phone/electronic device possession and use is greatly appreciated as we work to develop an efficient and effective school learning environment.

    Hello Sullivan Families,

‘Tis the season……...Some wonderful things happened at the Sullivan THIS PAST WEEK in this extraordinarily busy time of year….  Started the week with the High Honors Breakfast. It was an exceptional event for kids and parents alike. Very positive an a pleasure to celebrate some of our hardest working and highest achieving kids. Check out the pics or our website. Our R & R Assemblies went really well. Grade six student Madisyn Koza was acknowledged by the Lowell School Committee in their Spotlight on Excellence for her winning of a Golden Ticket in Willy Wonka's Imaginormous Challenge! Several of Ms. Mitrano’s eighth graders visited the State House as part of the Generation Citizen project. They distinguished themselves well. I think we may have some future politicians. Ms. Galipeau’s and Ms. McCarthy’s eighth grade English classes participated in a Poetry Slam with some Lowell high schoolers….(“snap,” “snap,” “snap”). Grade 8 had their annual field trip to LHS. Great reports on behavior. Finally, we finished the week with a PTO sponsored movie night for grade 7 put on by the PTO. For the most part, kids were well behaved and enjoyed the movie. Thanks to Sullivan PTO for putting it on!

THIS WEEK, we keep up the holiday pace with some of our STEM AA classes getting their “CSI” on as the Lowell Police Department comes in and teaches the kids about the science and work behind “finger printing.” Thanks Lowell Police Department. In addition, Wednesday, 12/12 Gr. 7 Poetry Slam during ELA classes. As participants in Lowell’s Freeverse! Youth poetry program, poets from Lowell High School will compete at the Sullivan.  The panel of judges will be made up of Sullivan eighth graders. The program is organized by Douglas Bishop, who teaches English as a Second Language at the Robinson Middle School. He is also a co-host and Slammaster at the Untitled Open Mic, on Market Street in Lowell. Freeverse! High school poets participating in the program are Tim Graham, Mariama Jalloh, Mablean Ntoro, and Kevin Truong. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Lowell Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Finally, looking for a way to get  into the holiday spirit? We have our annual Sullivan Holiday Concert on Thursday, December 13th (snow date: 12/19) from 6:30-7:30 PM. This year, along with our wonderful band we have dancers and a chorus!!!!!  In addition, there will be a bake sale at the concert organized by teh Sullivan PTO. (Baked good donations would be greatly appreciated.)

    Some OTHER IMPORTANT GENERAL NOTES:

    • Sullivan School Peer Mediation Program (NEW): The SCORE Peer Mediation Program has begun at the Sullivan School in collaboration with Lowell High School, Middlesex Community College, and the Massachusetts Office of Public Collaboration. We have trained Sullivan School students at each grade level to be peer mediators. Student mediators, along with a trained staff member, will help other students solve conflicts through a voluntary mediation process. Typical conflicts that might be addressed through peer mediation include: peer conflicts, rumors, name calling, social media issues, and friendship issues to name a few. Our student mediators will assist their peers in talking out and resolving conflicts peacefully. We are excited about this new program and the benefits that it will offer to the Sullivan School.
    • The Lowell Public Schools in conjunction with city of Lowell Health Department will be conducting a voluntary youth survey the week of December 17 for grades 7 & 8.  The survey is paper and pencil and is anonymous. The survey will ask about tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs and other drug use, sexual activity and behaviors related to intentional and unintentional injuries.  A detailed letter will be sent home with your child on 12/11. If you do not want your child to participate in this voluntary survey please sign the bottom of this letter and have him/her give to their homeroom teacher. The purpose of this survey is aimed at preventing and reducing health risk behaviors in our youth citywide.
