    Hello Sullivan Families,

I hope you are well and had a nice long weekend. Happy Memorial Day! IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE ONLY THREE WEEKS OF SCHOOL LEFT. IT IS IMPORTANT TO FINISH UP STRONG. STUDENTS NOT DOING “REMOTE LEARNING” WORK MAY BE IN JEOPARDY OF RECEIVING NO CREDIT AND “RETENTION” AND “SUMMER SCHOOL” ARE OPTIONS. IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION ON THIS, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR TEACHER (SEE BELOW). Please read below for important Sullivan information this week:

    1. Remote Learning Notes
      1. Remote Learning Schedule. Please check out our whole school remote learning schedule. This document is posted on facebook on Sunday evening.  This schedule is for parents to support your student to communicate with teachers about their remote learning.
      2. Grading/Progress Reports. Please see LPS website (https://www.lowell.k12.ma.us/Page/4108) for information on Lowell Public Schools Remote Learning Grading Policy. Progress reports were mailed home this past Friday (5/15/20). ALL PARENTS ARE ASKED TO CONTACT THEIR CHILD’S HOMEROOM TEACHER TO INDICATE THEY’VE RECEIVED THE PROGRESS REPORT. In addition, IF YOUR CHILD RECEIVED AN “NI” OR “U” ON THE PROGRESS REPORT, YOU SHOULD CONTACT YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER IMMEDIATELY. You, your child and his/her teacher can then strategize ways to improve your child’s performance for the remaining three  weeks of school. Staff email addresses are on the Sullivan website at https://www.lowell.k12.ma.us/domain/638

    1. Parent/Student Contact. At this point, all students/parents should be communicating with their teacher(s) early and often. The expectation is that there is communication AT LEAST ONCE EVERY THREE DAYS. Teachers will decide the best mode of communication, but you can visit the Sullivan website for staff email addresses: https://www.lowell.k12.ma.us/domain/638. In addition, parents/students can call the school if needed. Our Sullivan school clerk, Ms. Meaghan Keefe, will be manning the Sullivan School phone  and voicemail (remotely) from 7:30-2:30 daily. The number is 978-937-8993. (If you are leaving a message, be sure to leave your name and phone number.)
    2. Summer Programming. There will be “virtual” summer programming offered at the Sullivan this summer in the areas of “enrichment” and “skill recovery.” More information will be forthcoming. Stay tuned.
    3. Congratulations on some end-of-year rewards for several of our ELL students! They are as follows: Academic Achievement: Thiago D, Julio Miguel C.; Outstanding Effort: Lucas M., Andy P.’ Most improved: Andre S., Dryele Hl, Mota L.; Good Citizenship: Esly G., Francisa C.; Perseverance: rafael M., Mirela S., Luiz D..

Thank you and have a nice evening.

    Sincerely,

    Ed Foster

    Hello Sullivan Families,

Hi all. I hope you had a nice weekend. On a whim, we drove up to Gloucestor on Saturday with the wife, kids and dog and enjoyed the shore for few hours (with our masks of course). My daughter (16 years old with her learner’s permit….yikes!) drove, left the cell phones in the car and the kids were climbing on the rocks being kids. Came home and ordered a “Make your own Taco Kit” from a local restaurant. Then we made a fire outside and made smores. I don’t remember the last time we were able to have everyone together and the time to do something like that. It occured to me that I’m fortunate to enjoy some light during these dark days. I hope you and your families are well and are finding some light….

Please see below for a few important items of note for this week:

    1. Parent/Student Contact. At this point, all students/parents should be communicating with their teacher(s) early and often. The expectation is that there is communication AT LEAST ONCE EVERY THREE DAYS. Teachers will decide best mode of communication, but you can visit the Sullivan website for staff email addresses: https://www.lowell.k12.ma.us/domain/638.
    2. Sullivan Device Distribution, We had a very successful ROUND 2 of devise distribution this past Thursday. Thank you for all who participated. If you are still in need of a device (One device per family, unless there are 4 or more children.), please let your child’s teacher/the school know.
    3. School Entry. Since the governor’s announcement last week to close schools for the remainder of the year and go to remote learning, we have had several teacher and student/parent requests about getting into the school buildings to retrieve work and personal materials. As of now, because of the COVID-19 Health Crisis, there is NO ENTRANCE INTO SCHOOL BUILDINGS. District Administrators continue to work with public health officials on this and other matters related to the Crisis. The school communities will be informed if there is a change in the policy. I know it is frustrating (My own kids haven’t been able to get their stuff.) I will let the Sullivan community know as soon as I know if there is a change in policy.
    4. Student Behavior Expectations. We appreciate all of our students who are being safe, respectful, responsible and kind every day. There may be times when your child's teacher hosts a live conference with the class. We need your help to ensure that your child’s experience with live conferencing is a good one. When your child is on a live conference (Zoom, Google Meets, or any other live platform) with his/her class, he/she needs to adhere to all school rules. Each teacher will have his/her own norms, but in general we are asking for the following:
    • Students should arrive on time.
    • Students should find a quiet place free from distraction.
    • Students should be respectful in speaking, writing, and appearance.
    • Students should mute their audio and raise their hand when they want to speak.
    • Please discuss these rules with your child and supervise if necessary. There will be school consequences assigned for any student who does not adhere to the rules. Consequences will range from a verbal warning to parent contact and removal from the conference for a period of time. Thank you for your support!
    1. Social Media. If the world wasn’t already “on line” before this crisis, it is now. Now we have kids with a whole bunch of time on their hands “on line” and on Social Media……NOT a good combination. We already have had some kids send and receive inappropriate photos as well as make inappropriate comments about teachers on Social Media. The school is involved and LPD notified. In a sentence, KNOW WHAT YOUR KIDS ARE DOING ON SOCIAL MEDIA. Social Media remains a powerful tool and once something is sent out into the Cyberworld, it is out there forever. Also know that school rules and local law applies. Kids are kids and they make stupid mistakes sometimes. We all were there…. The problem is that with social media, it is out there FOR THE WORLD TO SEE FOREVER! Similar to when schools are accessible, inappropriate student use of social media will lead to school and police involvement. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Please reach out to the school if you need support.
    2. Grade 8 Students. Hello grade 8. Know that we are thinking of especially your grade during this time as this is your last year of your middle school experience before going off to high school. It is a rite of passage and supposed to be special. Know we haven’t forgotten about you. We are currently brainstorming ways to recognize and celebrate your accomplishments during these very unusual times. Stay tuned….

Be on the look-out for the Sullivan Staff baby-pics game….and no laughing!J   Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Ed Foster

Posted by Edward Foster on 4/20/2020 11:30:00 AM

    Hello Sullivan Families,

I hope you are well and enjoying your Patriot’s Day long weekend. We’ve been through a lot over the last months (and previously). Similar to the Patriot’s Day Marathon bombing of 2013, we banded together to get through…...Boston Strong. We will do the same now. And to steal from another “Patriot,” we band together and DO OUR JOB! It goes without saying the medical personnel and emergency personnel putting themselves in harm’s way everyday to battle this thing. It goes without saying every individual and families painstakingly practicing social distancing and good health habits. But it also goes for the Sullivan School “remote learning” perspective. Be it reaching out to students and preparing and following up with lessons and work (teachers); ensuring the kids get a device, quiet place to work at home and expecting time and effort from the kids (parents); and putting the time and quality effort into assignments (kids); we all are doing our job! Kudos to you. Keep up the good work. A few items of note this week.

    1. April Vacation Cancelled: Monday, April 20 is Patriots’ Day, which is a state holiday, and will still be observed as a “day off” from school. So all schools and district offices will be closed on Monday, and then remote learning will continue for the remainder of next week, Tuesday through Friday (April 21-24). Please note that meal service will continue at the regularly scheduled times and locations next week, even on Monday. A full list of locations and times for our meal service can be found on the district website
    2. Remote “Learning” Updates: As we continue to learn about and make effective “Remote Learning,” know that it is a work in progress and we will be tweaking it as we go along to ensure maximum benefit for all. Please see this week’s important information:
      1. Sullivan Device Distribution, ROUND 2. The NEXT ROUND FOR THE SULLIVAN DEVICE DISTRIBUTION IS: THURSDAY, APRIL 23RD 9-11 @ THE PYNE ARTS. This is only for students who do not have a computer at home. One device per family, unless there are 4 or more children. Please be sure to communicate with your child’s teacher if you need a device. DON’T JUST SHOW UP.  Parents should come with ID, a pen and the student's LASID. Many of our families don’t have access to a computer or the internet, if you or your child know of any Sullivan parents/kids who need a computer, please share this message with them.
      2. Grading. On Monday, April 6, we shifted our educational program from optional at-home learning activities to a remote learning plan which includes required assignments that will be graded and recorded on school report cards. Our grading system will follow the recommendation of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to convert to a “credit/no credit” system, in place of the traditional 0-100 scale. More information on this will be forthcoming.

Please discuss these rules with your child and supervise if necessary. There will be school consequences assigned for any student who does not adhere to the rules. Consequences will range from a verbal warning to parent contact and removal from the conference for a period of time. Thank you for your support!

      1. Student attendance. Similar to normal times, student/family attendance/communication between home and school is REQUIRED. For safety (and academic) reasons, everyone must be accounted for. Please make arrangements/efforts to ensure your child (and/or you) are in communications with your child’s teacher early and often. Sullivan staff will be doing the same.

Finally, in an April 9th letter to you I shared that I was a semi-finalist as principal of the West Intermediate School in Wilmington, MA. Since then, after a lengthy process, I have been offered and accepted the principal position at that school. This position will begin on July 1, 2020. Please know that it was a difficult decision for me but one I ultimately think best for me and my family. I have a special place in my heart for the Sullivan School and I commit to you that I will continue my work as your leader until the end of June to ensure that Sullivan students and the Community get what they need particularly during these uncertain times. I will also work to ensure a smooth transition to your next leader. The LPS Central Office Administration will be in contact with the Sullivan School Community within the next few weeks to explain the next steps to fill the Sullivan principal vacancy for the next school year. Thank you for a wonderful experience. I am deeply grateful to those relationships with the Sullivan staff, parents and kids I’ve been able to forge and great things we’ve been able to accomplish together.

    Thank you.

    Hi all,

Just a reminder about the decision made by the Lowell School Committee last night that April Vacation has been cancelled and “remote learning” will continue in earnest next week.

That said, next Monday, April 20 is Patriots’ Day, which is a state holiday, and will still be observed as a “day off” from school. So all schools and district offices will be closed on Monday. Remote learning will continue for the remainder of next week, Tuesday through Friday (April 21-24).

Please note that meal service will continue at the regularly scheduled times and locations next week, even on Monday. A full list of locations and times for our meal service can be found by clicking here.

    Thank you.

    Ed Foster

    Hello Sullivan Families,

I hope you are well. Happy Easter. I hope you had a chance to enjoy this beautiful day. Teachers have been busy this past week organizing The Phase II Remote Learning Experience for the kids. If your child’s teacher hasn’t already, they will be reaching out directly. Our goal is to create an educational experience for kids that can occur in a beneficial and reasonable way at home for the duration of the closure. We are here to help. Please let your child’s teacher know directly if you have any questions or concerns.

A few points of note this week:

    1. The Grade 8 Washington D.C. Trip has been CANCELLED. Participating parents will be contacted this week via email with information related to getting a full refund. Stay tuned.
    2. Remote Learning Updates
      • Student Behavioral Expectations: As we continue to go digital, please keep in mind all school rules apply during Zooms, Google Meets, etc.,etc. Students are expected to behave appropriately or will be removed from the activity and parents will be notified. Thank you in advance for your support.  More information on this will be forthcoming.
      • We passed out several “loaner devices” this past Thursday. Please see attached document for information related to “getting on” and such.
    3. LPS Grab and Go Meal Service. Please see the District website https://www.lowell.k12.ma.us/Page/3776 for food pick up options throughout the city.
    4. Support Staff. The Sullivan clerk, social workers (Mr. Thompson, Ms. Brooks and Ms. Dervartanian) guidance (Ms. Stappen), administration (Mr. Banks and Dr. Foster) will be available to assist/support students (and parents) during the closure. More information on what this will look like will be forthcoming. If you need to communicate with any of them, please visit the Sullivan staff email directory.
    5. April Vacation-4/20-24. April Vacation is still a vacation (NO SCHOOL FOR ADULTS OR KIDS-REMOTE OR OTHERWISE) as I have heard nothing formally to the contrary. I believe the School Committee is meeting this week to discuss further. Stay tuned.
    6. School Climate Activities: Be on the lookout for upcoming “virtual” Sullivan extra curricular activities. Visit our Sullivan Website https://www.lowell.k12.ma.us/Domain/15 and FB page for Sullivan Staff “We miss you!” photos…..And be on the look out for a Sullivan “Virtual” Talent Show. Stay tuned!

I think that is it for now. I will continue to inform you on changes during these unpredictable and fluid times. Take care.
