    Dear Sullivan Community,

I hope you are well. Well, tomorrow is the last day of school. “Wooooooooooooooo!” What a year! Thank you for working with us over this most unusual year to “keep the learning going” despite COVID 19. I know it has been hard and we had our ups and down with this new“remote learning” with everything else going on, but for the most part, we got through with getting something out of this process. I am very proud of our staff, parents and the kids for making it work despite the challenging circumstances. You are the best!

I’m not sure what is happening for next school year yet. Nobody really knows in the Commonwealth as we await guidance from the Federal Government, the State Government, Local Government, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the City/School Committee. Know that LPS currently has THREE working task forces consisting of LPS principals, teachers and parents who are developing plans for the following options: Full Remote Learning; Full “In School” Learning and a Hybrid. As direction is given by the Fed, State, DESE and City/School Committee, decisions will be made for next year and plans updated. This will be occurring into the summer and you’ll be notified accordingly. Stay tuned….

I want to wish our eighth graders the best of luck. They are the ones I think who lost the most  at least in the traditional eight grade experience. However, the grade 8 staff worked hard with a Reverse Parade and a virtual Sullivan Grade 8 Moving On Ceremony/Tribute to highlight their great accomplishment. The eighth graders made it thorough and while it wasn’t traditional, it was certainly unique. We are proud of you! Good luck on your great high school adventure. The Sullivan Grade 8 Virtual Moving On Ceremony/Tribute will be posted on the Sullivan Facebook Page on Monday 6/15 @ 6:00 PM. If an eighth grade parent does not feel comfortable with a picture and/or name of your 8th grade student being in the tribute please reach out directly to myself (efoster@lowell.k12.ma.us) by 2:00 PM on 6/15 and we will gladly pull their picture and/or name. This tribute is to recognize the success the students this year with academic and allied arts awards, along with saying goodbye and wishing them well next year. You may want to plan a “virtual” viewing party. Go Huskies!

Finally, as most of you know, I too will be moving on next year. I wish you the best of luck. The Sullivan is a unique and wonderful place and will always hold a special place in my heart. The principal search will continue over the next few weeks and you will be notified on the selection. I will be meeting with him/her over the summer to ensure a smooth transition.

Have a great and restful summer. Know it is well deserved. Be well and stay safe.

READ BELOW FOR IMPORTANT SCHOOL NOTES TO KEEP IN MIND NOW AND INTO THE SUMMER.

Things move quickly this time of the year. Please see below for important items of note this week:

Students participating in Sullivan “remote” summer school programs will return their computers at a later date after summer school is completed.

    • All students will need to wear a mask and bring a bag or their backpack with them (if possible).
    • Students should remain physically distant from anyone else in the building (6 feet apart) as much as possible.

Students should enter the building alone, collect their items and exit the building when finished. This should take about 5 minutes. An administrator and staff will be at the school each day to monitor/assist students as needed. Please contact Mr. Banks at MBanks@lowell.k12.ma.us if you have any questions.

    1. Summer Programming. There will be “virtual” summer programming offered at the Sullivan this summer in the areas of “enrichment” and “skill recovery”/summer school.
      • For enrichment, Students who registered for the Summer program should check their school emails for a VERY important message from Ms. DaSilva.  Activity selection forms were emailed to students who registered for the Sullivan Virtual Summer program.   Students should select a minimum of 4 different activities, but can participate in as many additional programs as they would like! Deadline to select Activities is June 19th. Although we have almost 80 students enrolled, we still have plenty of room!!!! All programs are virtual and all materials will be provided!   Ms DaSilva has added an additional program called Academic Boost for students who could benefit for additional academic reinforcement OR  enrichment.  Great way to keep those ELA and Math Skills sharp and ready for the next grade level. Any questions.. please contact Ms. DaSilva (ADaSilva@lowell.k12.ma.us). FINALLY, IF YOU HAVE A LOANER COMPUTER AND ARE DOING SUMMER SCHOOL, PLEASE DO NOT RETURN THE COMPUTER AT THIS TIME. • For virtual skill recovery/summer school. “Provisionally Promoted” students are required to participate in the virtual Sullivan Middle School Failure Intervention Summer Program. Successful participation/completion, will enable full promotion to the next grade. If your child is in this category, teachers have already reached out. A formal letter will be sent home on Monday 6/15/20. If you have any questions, let your teachers or administration know.
      • LPS SUMMER “Virtual” IDEA CAMP INFO. IDEA camp will be online this summer with kits for students to pick up. They will get to keep whatever they make (I.e. Robots, gardens, spheros, etc.) and it is FREE. Please see attached flier to 6/14 email for details.

    1. Sullivan Grade 8 Students and Families Thank you to all of our eighth graders and their families who attended the eighth grade reverse car parade on Friday 6/5. It was a huge success! Each student received a "swag bag" filled with a Sullivan School congratulatory lawn sign, a Sullivan School rally sign for their rooms, a Sullivan School t-shirt with all of the eighth graders' names on the back, and a high school survival kit to help them in ninth grade. Grade 8 staff delivered the bags to the homes of students who were unable to attend. Although this year's class was not able to participate in the regular events that we all come to expect, we hope that this was an event that they will always remember. We are extremely proud of our eighth graders! Eighth grade parents, be on the look out tomorrow (Monday, June 15th) at 6pm on the Sullivan Facebook page for a video tribute to the 8th grade graduating class. Dear Sullivan Community,

I hope you are well. It is hard to believe there is a little over a week (6 days) left in the 2019-2020 school year. (The last day of school is Monday June 15. ) It will not be forgotten. I can promise you that. I had the GREAT pleasure of being part of the Grade 8 Sullivan Reverse parade this past Friday. Music was playing, horns were blasting, Sullivanites (teachers and students) were cheering, and the tears were flowing. It was a wonderful event to celebrate our 8th graders. Keep an eye out for the Gr. 8 Sullivan lawn signs as well as t-shirts. They are a sight to behold.

On a more somber note, I am quite sure you are aware of the recent events taking place in our society. The tragic death of George Floyd shocked and caused great anger and angst for many of us, most notably our families of color. These are trying and uncertain days not made any easier in our current state of “remoteness” and “disconnectedness” in which we find ourselves.

Know that as a school, we are here as always to support our students and families. Institutional racism and other forms of societal injustices are very challenging topics and difficult conversations. I don’t have all the answers, but know that only through thoughtful dialogue and listening can we begin to understand and affect positive and peaceful changes. As a school, district and city, we strive for values of community, acceptance, dignity, inclusivity, equality, justice, and respect. We will be working together with ALL groups in the Community to ensure a life experience of fairness and support. As such, know that if we can support you, your child or your family in any way during these trying days, please let us know. Our teaching staff and support staff of social workers are here to help with the priority being the social and emotional well being of our students and Community. We are here for you. Please contact your child’s teacher, social worker or me for any reason. In addition, the following are some resources suggested to assist during this time. It is not an exhaustive list, but a beginning...

    Be well and stay safe.

    Respectfully,

    Ed Foster

It is also attached to my email sent tonight.  This schedule is for parents to support your student to communicate with teachers about their remote learning.
