    Hello Sullivan Parents,

This morning, Monday 10/22/18, we had a successful Options-Based DRILL at the Sullivan. Nice job kids and staff!

At the Sullivan Middle School the safety of our students is always a top priority. One way we promote safety is by having a safety plan in place for addressing various emergencies. These emergencies include, but are not limited to fires, intruders, bomb threats, and medical emergencies. Although we would never want any of these emergencies to take place, the administration and staff review and practice simulated events at various times throughout the school year to insure that everyone is aware of our safety protocols. We update our safety plan each year, share it with the Assistant Superintendent’s Office and review it with the Lowell Police Department’s School Resource Officers. The Lowell Police and Fire Departments also visit school buildings to review floor plans, gain building key access and discuss communication tactics for emergencies. The City of Lowell has been very proactive with emergency school safety for many years.

TODAY, Monday, October 22nd @ 8:15 AM Sullivan, Sullivan students and staff practiced our Intruder on Campus procedures, aka “Options-Based DRILL.” If your child comes home talking about a lockdown or evacuation, please be aware it was a practice DRILL. Students and staff practiced safety procedures to prepare for a real-life emergency. They did a great job! In a real emergency, we would also send you an automated phone message, so please make sure we have your most updated phone number on record at school.

Again, the safety procedures outlined above are intended to make the Sullivan Middle School safe for all students, staff and families. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you for reading this important message.

    Hello Sullivan Families,

I hope you are well and not too tired from this recent Red Sox run into the World Series! It has been a great season and hoping it is even going to be better.

This PAST WEEK, Grade 8 visited the Greater Lowell Technical High School for their annual field trip to hear about their school. Some wonderful reports about their overall behavior and interest level were sent. Great job Grade 8! The Lowell School Committee recognized summer math excellence of three of our students: Jack Steen, Keller Tyler Whitton and Isabelle Fardin. It was a magical night as students received certificates of excellence.  Finally, several of our boys and girls participated with distinction in the Boys and Girls Cross Country Middle School Meet of Champions. Kudos to all who participated. It was a wonderful event. Run, Sullivan, Run!

THIS WEEK, we will have our Options-based DRILL on Monday as we continue to prepare ourselves for different types of emergencies. (See below for details.) Tuesday 10/23 as been deemed Red Sox Day at the Sullivan. Students and staff are encouraged to wear their Red Sox garb as we do our part to support the local nine during their World Series run. GO SOX!

A few other important notes for your consideration:

For this first drill, we will give all in the Sullivan Community prior knowledge. For future drills, we will not give prior notice. Each Options-based drill will be followed by a communication to the Sullivan Community from me.

    Hello Sullivan Families,

We have a very busy week this past week as you all know. I appreciate greatly all those parents who were able to attend and participate in last week’s PTO meeting. At the meeting, school officials, district officials, and representatives from the Lowell Police Department discussed with parents the recent incident and school and district strategies/responses related to school safety including our “See Something/Say Something” initiative. Representatives from the Lowell Police Department and school officials will be visiting each classroom in the coming weeks to discuss with students school safety and the “See Something/Say Something” initiative. Please know the safety of our students is our NUMBER ONE priority.

This past week we had a very successful Open House where parents were able to visit their child’s(ren’s) teachers and administration. The building and classrooms looked great as teachers were able to review classroom expectations with attending parents. Also, the school administration was able to discuss in-depth with parents some pretty substantial Sullivan school initiatives this year including INCREASING “RIGOR & RELEVANCE” ACROSS THE BOARD. Most notably, they discussed the following:

    • New master schedule: Six day rotating schedule allows for variability and Common Planning Time.
    • Daily WIN (“What I Need”) blocks
      • Grade 6: Intervention-reading and math.
      • Grade 7 & 8: Focused instruction on needs; 30 days ELA, 30 days math (Algebra) for most.
    • Professional development work in
      • Differentiated instruction
      • Lucy Caulkins (ELA)
      • Eureka (Math)
      • FOSS kits (Science)
      • Generation Citizen - Gr. 8 (Social Studies)
    • “Literacy rich” school environment.
    • STEM Allied Art.

And CONTINUING TO IMPROVE SCHOOL CLIMATE with an(a)

    • Establishment of a School Climate Committee aimed at realizing our Vision: “The Sullivan learning community is a welcoming inclusive, and respectful environment where students excel through active engagement and feel safe in taking risks. All community members create success through teamwork, consistent effort and maintaining positive attitudes.”
    • Continued emphasis on PBIS: PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. At the Sullivan, we remind students to be safe, responsible, respectful and kind. Safety is our number one priority. “See something, say something” is emphasized on a daily basis. PBIS is the driving force that helps our staff and students stay on track and thrive in a positive learning environment.
    • Focus on better engaging Sullivan families (enhancing website and communications, updating and keeping current parent information [emails, phone numbers], social events etc.)
    • 21st Century Grant: After school & Summer programming for next THREE YEARS aimed at increasing student achievement, attendance and school climate. Components of the program include homework club, meals, transportation and an array of after school programs like STEM, dance, play/musical, sports, drama, coding, student government, etc., etc. ) BEGINS LATE OCTOBER.
    • Renewed focus on attendance (“Attendance matters.”)
    • Revitalization of school building and grounds.

    From our wonderful PTO…

    Hello Sullivan Parents,

I hope you are well. I am certain that you are as concerned as I am regarding last week’s firearm incident. Please know that the SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS IS OUR NUMBER ONE CONCERN AT ALL TIMES. We take violations of safety extremely seriously and we will continue to partner with the Lowell Police Department and district officials to ensure our continued safety at school.

I want to take this opportunity to inform you of what we will be doing this upcoming week and beyond in response to this incident:

    • For the student involved, disciplinary measures have been enacted in accordance with the Lowell Public School’s Code of conduct and Massachusetts General Laws. We are following all of the district’s guidelines and protocols.
    • In each homeroom on Monday there will be a discussion by homeroom teachers about the following: What we do to keep kids safe (Crisis plan, drills, SROs, locked facilities, etc.); The importance of “If you see something, Say something.” Informing students about the Lowell PD coming this week to talk to them about safety.
    • We will have access to extra counseling support if needed in the school on Monday morning for students who may be anxious.
    • Representatives from the Lowell Police Department will be coming to the Sullivan to talk directly to classes about safety.
    • We will be continuing our emphasis with Sullivan School staff on school safety during this week’s professional development.
    • The Lowell Police Deparment and school officials will be talking to Sullivan parents at our PTO meeting this week (9/18 @ 6 PM). All Sullivan parents are welcomed to attend.

I hope to see you at this week’s PTO Meeting on Tuesday, 9/18/18 @ 6:00 PM in the Sullivan Library.
