September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about this critical issue and remind everyone that help is always available. It's a difficult topic to talk about, but having these conversations can save lives. For our students and parents in Lowell Public Schools, it's important to remember that we're all in this together.
For Students
It can feel overwhelming when you or a friend are struggling. You might feel alone, but there are people who care and want to help. Talking to a trusted adult—like a parent, teacher, school counselor, or coach—is a great first step. They are there for you, and they can help you find the support you need.
Remember that mental health is just as important as physical health. If you wouldn’t hesitate to get help for a broken arm, don't hesitate to reach out when you're feeling down or overwhelmed. It's a sign of strength, not weakness, to ask for help.
For Parents
As a parent, you play a crucial role in your child's mental well-being. It's not always easy to know what to look for, but here are some things you can do:
-
Create an open and safe space: Encourage your child to talk about their feelings without judgment. Let them know you're always there to listen, no matter what.
-
Know the warning signs: Changes in behavior, like withdrawing from friends, losing interest in hobbies, or changes in sleep or eating habits, can be a sign that something is wrong.
-
Trust your instincts: If you're concerned about your child, don't hesitate to seek professional help. Your worry is valid, and it's better to be safe than sorry.
Resources for Everyone

Mental Health Partners
-
The Mental Health Office is tremendously proud to announce that the Cummings Foundation has awarded a 3-year $225,000 grant to support our work to build a comprehensive school mental health system in our schools. Mass General's Psychiatry Academy will partner with us to support this work.
The Massachusetts General Psychiatry Academy has partnered with the Lowell Public Schools through the Cummings Foundation Grant to support staff and students with clinical consultation, parent education, and the development of a comprehensive school mental health system.
McLean Hospital is piloting a program aimed at reducing absenteeism and has partnered with Lowell Public Schools to provide professional development and clinical consultation to staff working with some of our highest-need families. In the 24- 25 school year, McLean will also provide professional development to therapeutic staff on a range of topics.
The Mental Health Office extends its sincere gratitude to GLHA for their generous financial support of our Crisis Training Support Initiative, which benefits district-wide administrators and social workers. We also thank them for their commitment to staff well-being initiatives that support those working with our highest-needs student populations.
