November is Early Childhood Mental Health Awareness Month

Young children’s mental health is just as important as their physical health. From birth to age 8, children are learning how to understand and manage their feelings, form relationships, and handle everyday challenges.
Tips to support young children's mental health
- Spend time connecting and listening to your child.
- Help them name their feelings and express them safely.
- Keep routines consistent so they feel secure.
- Reach out to a mental health professional if you notice ongoing emotional or behavioral concerns.
Supporting children’s social and emotional growth early sets the stage for a lifetime of well-being. Learn more through our Mental Health Resources
National Grief Awareness Day – Thursday, November 20, 2025
This day, themed "Champions of Hope", highlights the needs of grieving children and encourages the community to offer support and hope.

Ways to participate:

- Share the message of hope on social media.
- Be a "Champion of Hope" by offering a listening ear or supportive presence to a grieving child.
- Learn more about how to support grieving children.

Vision of the Mental Health Office
-
The Lowell Public Schools will develop a comprehensive school mental health system valuing inclusivity and equity where every member, student, family, community partner, and staff collaborate to serve students' and families' best interests and needs. We are dedicated to educating the whole child, having equal access to resources, and being responsive to our diverse community's ever-changing needs.
Mental Health Partners
-
The Mental Health Office is tremendously proud to announce that the Cummings Foundation has awarded a 3-year $225,000 grant to support our work to build a comprehensive school mental health system in our schools. Mass General's Psychiatry Academy will partner with us to support this work.
The Massachusetts General Psychiatry Academy has partnered with the Lowell Public Schools through the Cummings Foundation Grant to support staff and students with clinical consultation, parent education, and the development of a comprehensive school mental health system.
McLean Hospital is piloting a program aimed at reducing absenteeism and has partnered with Lowell Public Schools to provide professional development and clinical consultation to staff working with some of our highest-need families. In the 24- 25 school year, McLean will also provide professional development to therapeutic staff on a range of topics.

The Mental Health Office extends its sincere gratitude to GLHA for their generous financial support of our Crisis Training Support Initiative, which benefits district-wide administrators and social workers. We also thank them for their commitment to staff well-being initiatives that support those working with our highest-needs student populations.
