    Q: My child will turn 4-years-old after the registration period. Can I still register my child during that time to be included in the lottery?

    A: Yes, if your child turns 4 on or before September 1, 2021, your child is eligible for preschool in the 2021-2022 school year.

     

    Q: If I register my child on the first day of the registration period, will I get my first choice or preferred school?

    A: Not necessarily. All students completing the registration form and submitting documentation between March 8, 2021 and March 28, 2021 receive a random lottery number. Registering your child on the first or last day of the registration period has no effect on the assignment of the random lottery number. The lower the lottery number you are assigned, the more likely you are to receive a placement offer based on your first choice, but when you register during the registration period does not impact this lottery number.

     

    Q: What if I don’t submit all of the required documentation before the registration period closes?

    A: Only complete registrations including all required documents for registration will receive a lottery number. Incomplete registrations will be placed on the waitlist based on the date registration and documentation is completed.

     

    Q: Can I register after the preschool registration period (March 8-28)?

    A: Yes, but please note that anyone submitting a completed registration and required documentation after March 28 are waitlisted and will be placed after official assignment letters are issued based on seat availability and date of registration. The Early Childhood Department maintains an up-to-date waitlist. 

     

    Q: Do I need to register my preschool child if they are currently enrolled in the Lowell Public Schools with an IEP to return to preschool in 2021-22 school year?

    A: No. Preschoolers who return for a second year of preschool do not need to re-register their child. However, please note that all students currently enrolled in the Lowell Public Schools preschool program registering for kindergarten must register again for the 2021-2022 school year. 

     

    Q: What happens if I do not get the school I wanted?

    A: All registrants assigned a lottery number will receive a placement offer notice via email with clear directions regarding next steps. All parents/guardians must respond to the notice selecting one of the following options: 

    1. Accept the placement 
    2. Accept the placement but have your child placed on the waitlist for your preferred school. 
    3. Reject the placement and placed on the waitlist for your preferred school; or 
    4. Reject the placement and choose an alternative preschool placement.

     

    Q: What happens if I choose the full-day for my session choice, but my preferred school only has an AM or PM session?

    A: Placement offers are made based on lottery numbers and school preference and are not based on preferred sessions.  

     

    Q: Does placement of an older sibling guarantee my preschooler an assignment in the same school?

    A: No. Unfortunately, sibling preference does not apply to preschool. Preschool assignments are based on lottery numbers. Placement for preschool is only for one year.  

     

    Q: Will my preschooler be able to get a bus to and from the preschool program?

    A: No. Transportation is not available for preschoolers. Only preschool students who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which includes transportation are eligible for a bus.

     

    Q: Do all schools offer full-day preschool?

    A: No. The full-day options are available at the Cardinal O’Connell Early Learning Center and the Greenhalge Elementary School. If you would like to be included in the lottery for full-day programming, you must choose one of these 2 schools. 

     

    Q: What happens if I do not receive notification of a potential preschool placement?

    A: All notices will be sent to the email address used to register your child. Please check any spam/junk folders. Maintain a copy of registration confirmation email as it will reference your child’s PR number and document submission date.  If you do not receive confirmation or any information, please contact the Early Childhood Department at 978-674-2050.

     

    Q: What happens if I do not respond to the offer of preschool placement? Will my child still be able to attend LPS preschool in September?

    A: Possibly. If you do not respond to the notice within the designated timeframe, the placement may be offered to the students on the waitlist. Any families not responding to the notice can be added to the waitlist. 

     

    Q: Will my child automatically go to kindergarten at the school they attend preschool?

    A: No. All students must register for kindergarten. Preschool is a 1-year placement only, and has no bearing on kindergarten placement. Dates for kindergarten registration will be announced at a later date. More information about kindergarten registration will be posted on the Lowell Public Schools website.
